That's 1.3 billion tons of all sorts fo food that could go towards third world countries and all the people in the world that are suffering from starvation. However, many times the food goes bad due to lack of refrigeration, getting squashed at the bottoms of bags or crates, or being soiled as it gets transported from the farm to market or supermarket. But in wealthier countries, 40% of the food is thrown out by consumers. Whether or not it fits our appetite, was made the wrong way, or is a bit too cold, many Americans push their plate to the side and opt out of said meal.
We, people, are the most wasteful on Earth. If we don't like a type of food given to us, we don't eat it. Especially at restaurants. If something tastes a bit off or there's an ingridient in there that you didn't ask for, the plate is more often than not sent back to the kitchen only to be remade again. This not only wastes food, but the money, time, electricity, and other resources that go into . preparing meals.
